Practitioners make on-going, incidental assessments from their observations of the babies and young children. These inform how the practitioners interact in the ‘here and now’ to support learning and development needs as well as informing future planning.
In addition, all teachers and practitioners carry out formative assessments of the learning and development of the babies and young children. These are linked to the Development Matters document in order to identify the curriculum area and age band in which the child is demonstrating knowledge, skills or understanding. These assessments are collated in Learning Journeys, comprising photographs and written observations. We like to share Learning Journeys termly with parents and the contents will be given to each child when they leave nursery.
The Learning Journeys are used to create summative assessments in the ‘Tracking Progress’ documents. This document provides information about the achievement and progress for each baby and child. This information is transferred onto a database in order to provide opportunity for analysis of the data.
